The Hannah Project, scheduled to begin in Spring 2006, includes the construction of sixteen new housing units affordable to women-headed working families. This project consists of eight white clapboard duplex structures featuring deep front porches and standing seam metal roofs that are a contemporary adaptation of the typical shotgun/bungalow architecture of Third Ward. The land for the project has already been purchased with funding from the Houston Endowment.
The sixteen new 700-900 square foot units include ten family-sized 3-bedroom/1 ½ bath and six 2-bedroomm/1 bath apartments. They will be situated behind the existing duplexes connected by a green space filled with plantings, benches and art created by community residents and artists. It is adjacent to our campus and within walking distance of both elementary and middle schools, as well as Emancipation Park.
